Spanish Course Credit for Study Abroad

A. The Emory Program in Salamanca

The Coordinator of Study Abroad, José Luis Boigues, (jboigue@emory.edu), advises all students participating in the Emory Program in Salamanca, Spain. Professor Boigues also approves all Study Abroad Programs in Spain. Students who want to apply credit earned in Salamanca toward either a major or a minor in Spanish must consult the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Spanish.

B. Department of Spanish and Portuguese Program in Argentina

The goal of the Emory Summer Program in Buenos Aires is to expose students to an understanding of Latin America and its cities using as a model Buenos Aires, one of the most vibrant, cosmopolitan, and diverse urban centers in South America. The program creates the opportunity for students to live in Buenos Aires and understand the specifics of Spanish-American societies, within a rigorous academic setting provided by Emory faculty members. The goals of the program will be met by classroom instruction, independent research projects, cultural excursions, intensive reading and research, and homestays with Argentine families. For information about the upcoming program please contact Center for International Programs Abroad (CIPA) at 404-727-2240.

C. All other Spanish Study Abroad Programs

Emory students do not automatically receive Spanish credit for courses taken at overseas institutions. Students must demonstrate academic need in order to receive credit for a non-Emory Program in Spain. Students seeking General Credit toward graduation for courses taken in a study abroad program should consult CIPA. However, students seeking credit for Distribution Requirements, or for the Spanish Major or Minor, must contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Spanish (DUS). The Department of Spanish evaluates specific courses to determine if they meet the department's standards and are appropriate for Emory credit in Spanish. The Coordinator of Study Abroad gives the final approval of the program.

D. Receiving credit

Be advised: CIPA approval of general credit does not guarantee distribution credit or major/minor credit in Spanish. To receive distribution credit or major/minor credit in Spanish, a student must meet with the DUS at least twice, once before and once after the academic term abroad.

The Process: How to receive distribution or major/minor credit in Spanish:

I. Pre-approval: Before going abroad, students must meet with the DUS. The DUS will pre-approve all classes. Pre-approval will be official only after the DUS has signed the course registration form. The student is responsible for collecting the following materials, which the DUS will review:

a) a description of the program the student plans to attend, as well as descriptions of the courses s/he is interested in taking;
Please keep in mind that, in order to count for major or minor credit in Spanish, a course must deal with analysis of texts. These texts can be written (almost anything in the humanities goes, that is, for example, anthropology, history, all literature, etc), or visual (film, art), or even oral (such as music, when dealing with popular culture).

b) an Emory registration form (available from CIPA), which lists the study abroad courses the student plans to take, as well as possible course number equivalents to be used on his/her Emory transcript;

c) the application to the program in which the student intends to participate (usually needs to be signed by the DUS).

Some of these materials cannot be obtained by fax or email, so begin to plan your study abroad as soon as possible. Once the DUS has pre-approved the list of courses, the Coordinator of the Spanish Study Abroad Program must approve the program itself. DUS approval of the courses does NOT mean approval of the program. Once the Coordinator of Study Abroad has approved the program, CIPA will register the student for the courses pre-approved on the registration form. If the student has to modify her/his registration subsequent to arrival overseas, s/he must contact the DUS to get pre-approval for all changes to his/her course schedule.

Be advised: A registration and/or program application, signed by an adviser other than the DUS in the Department of Spanish, are not adequate approval for distribution or major/minor credit in Spanish. Students must receive pre-approval from the DUS to receive distribution or major/minor credit in Spanish.

II. Final Approval of Credit: Returning from a study abroad program, students meet with the DUS a second time to complete the credit approval process. The student is responsible for collecting the following materials, all of which the DUS must have to approve credit:

a) a complete syllabus, including reading list and grade distribution, for each course taken in the study abroad program;

b) all class notes, exams and quizzes from each course;

c) all term papers written for courses in the study abroad program. In order to receive 300 level credit, a student must write between 9 and 12 pages, for 400 level the numbers are between 12 and 15. Papers under 3 pages will not count, but the total can be achieved with several substantial papers starting a 4 pages.

The delivery of all these materials to the DUS is a crucial step in the final accreditation process. Without them, the DUS cannot grant Spanish academic credit, even if pre- approved. However, submitting the above materials does not guarantee that the DUS will approve Spanish academic credit.

III. Transcripts: The accreditation process cannot be completed without an official transcript from the institution abroad. Unfortunately, it can take as long as a full semester to receive transcripts from overseas universities. The DUS will determine course credit in a timely manner, once all of the required materials have been submitted.
