Additional stipulations for the major and minor in Spanish:
You must consult with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) in the Spanish department before declaring a major or minor. The DUS will assign an advisor to majors, with whom you must meet each term before registering for courses.
Under the new 2009 General Education program, you can use as many courses in Spanish as you wish to satisfy the writing requirement. Spanish courses that regularly satisfy the WR are 300, 301, 302 and the honors courses.
Students in the major or minor may receive credit for up to 12 credit hours (3 courses) taken in an approved study program abroad. This number does not include study abroad courses taught by Emory faculty which count as regular Emory courses. Both majors and minors must take at least one 400-level seminar at Emory, regardless of their study abroad credits approved.
If you plan to take some of your Spanish major or minor courses on a study abroad program (except for the Salamanca program), you must get preapproval from the DUS for these courses the semester before you leave. Then, upon your return, you must bring all written papers and syllabi back to the DUS for final approval. No exceptions will be made to this procedure. Read the web pages for "Study Abroad" for more details.
One course taught in Portuguese at the 300 or 400 level may satisfy, respectively, one of the electives or seminars for the Spanish major and one of the electives for the Spanish minor.
Advanced students in Spanish are encouraged to write an honors thesis in their senior year. Honors students register for Spanish 495A in the fall semester and Spanish 495B in the spring semester. Spanish 495B may count as one of the four 400-level seminars required for the major, but 495A may not.
