The student will be an intern at the CNN Center. The intern will be in communication with people from across the world, but will be based in Atlanta. The likely candidate is an internationally focused individual with a passion for business or journalism. Interns are provided with either a parking pass or MARTA pass, and are able to participate in CNN wide intern events.

The internships are highly competitive; students from schools across the southeast are considered. Those interested must have a minimum of a 3.0 average (usually above a 3.5 is what is considered to be a valid applicant).

Students work directly with the Executive and Program Coordinator on: developing/writing marketing materials and web content, researching legislative issues, service and program development, fundraising, and they would also assist in event planning. An interest in politics, political communications/journalism, leadership development, and Latino rights is encouraged.

Students may serve as Spanish interpreters, giving one-to-one communication assistance to Spanish-speaking patients. While there is no medical interpreting, there are two areas in which volunteers may interpret; the International Medical Center or the Language Interpretive Services.

This is only a volunteer position, the Grady Clinic does not offer internships per se.  However, students who wish to take SPAN 314 and work at this site should also contact Dr. Flavia Mercado, for information regarding the volunteer reading program:

Mission Statement: The Latin American Association helps Latino families achieve their aspirations for their academic, social and economic advancement. Students will be placed in a variety of capacities depending on individual interest. This organization accepts volunteers in divisions that deal with domestic violence, employment, immigration law, and social services.

Project SHINE- Students Helping In Naturalization and English

Project SHINE is a national service-learning initiative that builds partnerships among community colleges, universities and community based organizations to benefit immigrants, refugees, and college students. Project SHINE links college students with immigrants and refugees seeking to learn English and navigate the complex path to U.S. citizenship. Students will assist adult Latin Americans with English acquisition and the process of naturalization. This entails tutoring English and U.S. history that is needed for the citizenship exam. Students work with teachers of ESL classes at Dekalb Technical College and Clarkston International Bible Church.

Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services provides healthcare, education, and social services to the poor and underserved. There is a referral program that helps patients who have no insurance or are uninsured find access to specialized medicine. There are outreach clinics that serve the homeless population of Atlanta. There are possibilities to help with education and social service. Internship opportunities at Mercy Care vary depending on what is needed.

The Teaching and Learning Initiative for Central America is an organization dedicated to expanding access to basic educational materials and promoting international educational partnerships that will improve the overall access to education throughout Central America.   The vision of TALICA is to facilitate life-long learning by providing materials to local community and/or public school libraries in Central America.  Establishing these centers, which will celebrate the value of learning, will increase the likelihood of students attending and completing basic educational requirements.  Students work in the Atlanta office, in such areas as public relations, communication and fundraising, data entry and preparation of donated books (preparing for distribution), website update, and development of a volunteer program.

Students will provide interpretation services for about 8 hours a week in order to reach out to area families in need.  We are looking for someone to come 1-2 days for a set time every week, sometime between the hours of 8am-5pm.  It would most likely involve face to face interpretation with minimal phone calls involved.
