IMPORTANT NOTE: These are POSSIBLE sites for these two courses. Please consult with the professor of each course about the selection of a site. Argentine Consulate CNN International The student will be an intern at the CNN Center. The intern will be in communication with people from across the world, but will be based in Atlanta. The likely candidate is an internationally focused individual with a passion for business or journalism. Interns are provided with either a parking pass or MARTA pass, and are able to participate in CNN wide intern events. The internships are highly competitive; students from schools across the southeast are considered. Those interested must have a minimum of a 3.0 average (usually above a 3.5 is what is considered to be a valid applicant). Caminar Latino Clifton Child Care Center GALEO- The Georgia Association of Latino Elected Officials Students work directly with the Executive and Program Coordinator on: developing/writing marketing materials and web content, researching legislative issues, service and program development, fundraising, and they would also assist in event planning. An interest in politics, political communications/journalism, leadership development, and Latino rights is encouraged. Grady Clinic Students may serve as Spanish interpreters, giving one-to-one communication assistance to Spanish-speaking patients. While there is no medical interpreting, there are two areas in which volunteers may interpret; the International Medical Center or the Language Interpretive Services. This is only a volunteer position, the Grady Clinic does not offer internships per se. However, students who wish to take SPAN 314 and work at this site should also contact Dr. Flavia Mercado, for information regarding the volunteer reading program: Flavia Mercado, M.D. Guatemalan Consulate Students will have the opportunity to work on various projects. In the past students have aided in establishing contacts within the community and entering this information into databases, helping in the development of projects to be presented to the President of Guatemala, aiding in international student exchange programs, and also working with the Guatemalan-Atlanta Chamber of Commerce. Latin American Association Mission Statement: The Latin American Association helps Latino families achieve their aspirations for their academic, social and economic advancement. We accomplish this through direct programs and integrated community partnerships that focus on youth academic achievement, education and prevention, and services to families with urgent needs. Students will be placed in a variety of capacities depending on individual interest. This organization accepts volunteers in divisions that deal with domestic violence, employment, immigration law, and social services. Mexican Consulate Montclair Elementary School Montclair is an elementary school whose student body is over 80% Hispanic. While there are a variety of positions in which the student may be placed, they most likely will either participate by tutoring students, or acting as translators during parent-teacher conferences. Project SHINE- Students Helping In Naturalization and English Project SHINE is a national service-learning initiative that builds partnerships among community colleges, universities and community based organizations to benefit immigrants, refugees, and college students. Project SHINE links college students with immigrants and refugees seeking to learn English and navigate the complex path to U.S. citizenship. Students will assist adult Latin Americans with English acquisition and the process of naturalization. This entails tutoring English and U.S. history that is needed for the citizenship exam. Students work with teachers of ESL classes at Dekalb Technical College and Clarkston International Bible Church. RRISA- Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services of Atlanta Students will have the opportunity to work in a variety of different areas, including; community outreach, employment services, education and youth programs, and resettlement efforts. Saint Joseph’s Mercy Care Services provides healthcare, education, and social services to the poor and underserved. There is a referral program that helps patients who have no insurance or are uninsured find access to specialized medicine. There are outreach clinics that serve the homeless population of Atlanta. There are possibilities to help with education and social service. Internship opportunities at Mercy Care vary depending on what is needed. Sutton Middle School Generally, students help with English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, acting as a classroom aide. There are numerous creative possibilities within the ESL framework, and the ESL Lead Teacher is willing to work with individual students to create special projects. TALICA: The Teaching and Learning Initiative for Central America The Teaching and Learning Initiative for Central America is an organization dedicated to expanding access to basic educational materials and promoting international educational partnerships that will improve the overall access to education throughout Central America. The vision of TALICA is to facilitate life-long learning by providing materials to local community and/or public school libraries in Central America. Establishing these centers, which will celebrate the value of learning, will increase the likelihood of students attending and completing basic educational requirements. Students work in the Atlanta office, in such areas as public relations, communication and fundraising, data entry and preparation of donated books (preparing for distribution), website update, and development of a volunteer program.
