Professor Santos Olmsted was born in Belém, the gateway to the Amazon region of Brazil, and grew up in Rio de Janeiro. She received her undergraduate degree in Social Sciences from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and also studied Journalism for several years in Brazil. In 1991 she moved to the United States, where she studied British and American Literature, Women's Studies and Creative Writing in Chicago before moving to Massachusetts, where she received her M.A. and completed her PhD coursework in Brazilian Literature from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.  Before coming to Emory in the fall semester of 2001, Prof. Santos Olmsted taught one semester at Smith College as a Visiting Lecturer. She has been serving as Director of the Portuguese Program since the fall semester of 2005. Her area of specialization is Contemporary Brazilian Literature and Culture, with a secondary emphasis on continental Portuguese and Luso-African literatures and cultures. Her other areas of interest include theories of Second Language Acquisition, Foreign Language Pedagogy and Methodology as well as multi-media usage in language classes.  At the moment, Prof. Santos Olmsted is teaching courses with an emphasis on environmental and social issues in Brazil.
