The Department considers a thorough mastery of the language the indispensable basis for undertaking graduate work successfully. At the time of admission a student should have an excellent command of Spanish and preferably a reading knowledge of another language. The Graduate School requires that applicants submit scores of the Graduate Record Examination. Decisions on admission and financial aid are based on all available information: letters of recommendation, undergraduate record, a required writing sample (term paper or thesis), GRE scores and, whenever possible, an on-campus interview. Fellowships (requiring no service) and graduate assistantships (requiring teaching service) are regularly available ($15,500 in 2006-2007). It is departmental policy to award full fellowships to students for their first year on a competitive basis; hence first-year students have no teaching responsibilities. The Department can also nominate outstanding applicants for the George W. Woodruff Fellowship ($20,500 in 2006-2007), the Emory Diversity Fellowship ($20,000 in 2006-2007) and the Arts and Sciences Fellowship ($19,500 in 2006-2007). The Department also funds transportation, tuition, and room and board expenses associated with student attendance to its Graduate Summer Workshop in Salamanca. Assuming consistent progress towards the doctoral degree, some form of financial support is guaranteed for four years. Funds to sponsor travel by graduate students to professional conferences are available from the Graduate Student Council and from the Department. Advanced graduate students also have the opportunity to become Teaching Assistants in the Emory Summer Program in Spain.
